An ultrasonic guidance
system designed to allow a visually
impaired user “see”
in a similar way to a bat –
by using ultrasonic pulses to
gauge the distances of objects
being “viewed”.
VIPER:
What: A device designed
to allow a visually
impaired user to “see”
like a bat, i.e., using
ultrasonics.
Why: The main aim was
to aid a blind person
to easily navigate unfamiliar
surroundings.
How: A device that is
worn like a pair of
sunglasses. It uses
a directional ultrasonic
beam to detect the distance
of the object being
“viewed”.
This information is
converted into a tone
proportional in pitch
to the distance.
